Hans Irmer founded the Bielefelder Guitar Ensemble with students of his guitar class at the Music and Art School (MuKu) in Bielefeld, Germany in 1990.  Since then, the ensemble has grown to include guitar students from the entire music school.

In 2000 the Bielefelder Guitar Ensemble was named the best German youth guitar ensemble at the "German Ochestra Competition."  Shortly following, they joined theYouth Guitar Orchestra Baden-Württemberg and Cuban guitar ensemble "Sonantas Habaneras" for a concert.

At the 3rd International Bielefelder Guitar Festival in the fall of 2000, they began to collaborate with the Heidelberger Ensemble "Guitart," an ensemble which was won the German Orchestra Competition in 1996.  Since then, the Bielefelder Guitar Ensemble rehearses regularly with the conductor Helmut Oesterreich.

The Bielefelder Guitar Ensemble has successfully participated in numerous national and international competitions:

  • 2003: 1st Prize at the first International Guitar Orchestra Competition in Rheine, Germany

  • 2004: 2nd Prize at the International Guitar Orchestra Comeptition in Prague, Czech Republic

  • 2009: 1st Prize at the Prager Saiten Competition (winner of all categories)

  • 2011: 1st Prize at the 3rd International Guitar Orchestra Competition in Rheine, Germany

  • 2012: 1st Prize at the 8th German Orchestra competition in Hildesheim

  • 2015: 1st Prize at the 4rd International Guitar Orchestra Competition in Rheine, Germany

  • 2016: 1st Prize at the 9th German Orchestra competition in Ulm

Concert tours have taken the Bielefelder Guitar Ensemble to Bulgaria, Bosnia, Estonia, Georgia, Peru, Poland and Portugal.

Many of the enemble members are prize winners in the solo and ensemble categories at the "Jugend Musiziert" competition.

A large part of the success of the group is due to the yearly working phase during the Easter holidays, in which current repertoire is intensively rehearsed in order to prepare for upcoming competitions and performances, including the regular performance at the Bielefeld Guitar Forum.
